Outlines the history of understanding the link between germs and disease, and then reviews both the body's own defences and the various means of prevention of disease through hygiene and sanitation, describes the measures that help ensure safe water and food supplies before exploring in some detail the hygiene measures we can each take in the home.. The final section takes stock of the current position and future prospects for combating infectious disease, and includes an appendix reviewing the topical problem of increasing resistance to antibiotics. The booklet is a resource designed to support teaching.
