The World Summit on Sustainable Development Johannesburg (26 August - 4 September 2002)Together with other chlorine and PVC organisations, Euro Chlor will man a WCC exhibition stand at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. This will communicate the important role of chlorine chemistry in providing sanitation, safe drinking water and PVC piping systems and will support the UN's decision to make secure water supplies a priority at the Johannesburg conference. Report Highlights Sustainability CommitmentsAhead of the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg end August, the chlor-alkali industry has published a global report highlighting efforts made to protect human health and the environment and its economic contribution to society. Commented Dr. Barrie S. Gilliatt, Executive Director of Euro Chlor, a leading member of the World Chlorine Council that published the report: "The outcome of the Summit should include a strong emphasis on meeting the needs of people without safe drinking water or adequate sanitation." WHO and UNICEF estimate 2.2 million people, most of them children, die every year in developing countries from diseases associated with poor sanitation, inadequate hygiene and unsafe drinking water. Probably the most important health benefit of chlorine is water purification. Chlorine added to drinking water has helped to virtually eliminate diseases such as cholera and typhoid in many countries. At the Summit there will be a WCC exhibit (No. 498) explaining the role of chlorine chemistry in providing sanitation, safe drinking water and PVC piping systems. Read the report on the new WCC website (www.worldchlorine.org). European Chlor-Alkali Industry: On the Move Towards Sustainable Development.Euro Chlor produced in 2001 it's first-ever report on sustainable development, The European chlor-alkali industry: on the move towards sustainable development. The report describes the sector's contribution to the three key aspects of sustainable development - creating wealth and jobs, benefiting society and safeguarding the environment. In a united industry-wide approach, Euro Chlor's 43 producer member companies have adopted six qualitative measures for tracking their progress. These unilateral voluntary commitments include better energy efficiency and reduced water use - two aspects of sustainability linked to the theme of conserving natural resources, due to be discussed at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. Report available in PDF version. Summaries of the report are available in English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish. |
