Guidance Documents - Storage and handling of chlorinated solvents

The chlorinated solvents methylene chloride, perchloroethylene and trichloroethylene, can, if not handled and used in the proper way, pose certain risks to human health and the environment.

The General Technical Working Group of ECSA has issued the third edition of a booklet intended to help distributors and users of chlorinated solvents to handle those products safely and with care, thus protecting man and nature against possible negative impact.

This booklet deals with:

• Construction and operation of bulk storage facilities and the handling of drums - precautions to be taken;
• Relevant (European and national) regulations, impacting the use of chlorinated solvents.

The recommendations proposed in this code are based on the understanding and experience of the chlorinated solvents producers in their respective countries and the European Union at the date of issue of this document. In some locations more stringent measures may be necessary and these recommendations are in no way intended as a substitute for the relevant national or international regulations which should be consulted and respected.
