Members INOVYN to invest in EDC import capacity at Martorell, Spain

02/02/2017

Euro Chlor member company INOVYN is investing in a project to develop the import capacity of ethylene dichloride (EDC) at Martorell, Spain.

EDC is the essential raw material for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) and the investment will enable EDC supply by ocean-going vessels, with storage in Barcelona harbour and rail transport to the Martorell Site.

The investment at Martorell allows INOVYN to maintain PVC and VCM production at current capacity beyond the date when production from its mercury cellroom will cease due to the phase out of mercury-based production under international regulations.

The investment at Martorell also includes the production of essential commodity chemicals hydrochloric acid, caustic soda and sodium hypochlorite

Filipe Constant, Business Director for INOVYN noted "We are engaged in ongoing dialogue with regional and national authorities in Spain to secure the long-term competitiveness of the operations at Martorell against a backdrop of high energy costs for electro-intensive companies, such as INOVYN”
